Enteric viral infections

Viruses can be an important cause of diarrhoeal illness, vomiting, and jaundice.  Noroviruses and hepatitis E have recently caused major outbreaks in resource-rich settings but whether they are equally important in countries such as Uganda is not known (because tests for the causes of these illnesses are not commonly available). We plan to use samples from the EMaBS cohort to find out how common these infections are in Uganda children, and at what age they become infected.  This information may be useful in planning for the use of vaccines to prevent these diseases (Protocol).
