Laptop Pre-travel Checks
Things to do to your laptop before taking it away. Best to do these from LSHTM if possible, or your home broadband.
- Run Windows Updates http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- Run antivirus software updates (right click on the icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and select update - if you are running free software be sure to select the free options) You can download software for Windows or Mac from the ITS Pages.
- You may want to consider installing an anti-spyware package such as Malware Bytes.
- If you need regular access consider installing LSHTM Remote Desktop for easy use of your email/files
While away you can :
- check mail via Webmail or via the simple interface on mobiles/tablets. Alternatively you can use most email clients to connect via these settings
- access data via a web browser via this link
- do one off file exchanges with colleagues either inside or outside LSHTM via our SFX service.
If you are away for longer periods you may want to consider installing Groupwise Client for Windows (or Mac Client) if asked enter ip address: po-eph-mail.lshtm.ac.uk , port: 1679 . It is also possible to have our file synchronisation software, iFolder, enabled on your account.

Alternative to Groupwise Attachement Stripper
As the GroupWise Stripper (gwstrip) is unsupported and has become increasingly unreliable in new versions of GroupWise one alternative is to purchase a relatively cheap piece of software from Formative
These apps run on the formative framework. This is free for 30 days (trial) and is then about £15 a licence or £45 for 10 licences see the Formativ Sales Page.
Formativ Runtime can be installed from N:\COMPUTE\software\Formativ_Apps_for_GroupWise and is called formativruntime, exe
There are then 2 options:
1. To just strip attachments install the "delete_attachments....exe" app.
2. To print mails to pdf with a list off attachments install print_message.exe. This is free.
Double click on the file in install. (Copies of these are in the folder on N:\COMPUTE\software\Formativ_Apps_for_GroupWise.)
As ever, any problems contact EPH-Help@lshtm.ac.uk
Running a Sophos virus scan.
- Right click the Sophos blue shield in your system tray (bottom right of screen)
- "Click Open Sophos..."
- Go to file, new scan
- Select your C and D drives (if D is a fixed disk) and any other usb drives
- Select "Configure this scan (at the bottom of this screen)
- Tick "Automatically Cleanup items containing Viruses/Spyware"
- Click OK (at the bottom of the page)
- Click "Save and Start Scan" (you may be asked to name the scan)
Subscribing to RSS feeds in Groupwise
Groupwise client can be used as an RSS feedreader, to keep tracks on news, publications, blogs, etc:

To subscribe in this manner the easiest way may be to locate the feed in Firefox or Internet Explorer, click on the feed symbol in the Address Box or Toolbar:
Firefox
IE8
Using FireFox
Firefox will then offer a dialog on which application to use to read the feed. You can accept the default to install it as a 'Live Bookmark' within Firefox, or to add it to Groupwise as above, do the following:
Firefox
If Groupwise is not already listed as an option, you need to specify the location of the groupwise program:

Using Internet Explorer 8
In IE8 the process is very similar:
IE8
IE8
At this point Groupwise takes over:

Follow Publications database updates via RSS
It is now possible to track additions to the School publications database via an RSS feed. This can be done at the Faculty, Department, or Author level. Simply browse the database to the level you wish to keeps tracks on, and click on the orange RSS symbol in the Address Box (what happens next depends on what OS and browser you are using and whether you have subscribed to RSS feeds in the past... but that's a subject for another post or three)

Publications Database FAQ
Having spent the last three months answering basic queries about the Publications Database and the MyLSHTM profile system and the REF Best Outputs selection system, and how they all relate to each other, and how to get data in and out of each of them, I now finally have time to make a list of some of the common queries and misunderstandings. I have collated these into a simple list of questions and answers, that probably cover 90% of the queries I receive. I will continue to add to it and occasionally reorganize it as questions come in, and hopefully in the long run save myself, and you, a lot of time.

Sending EndNote files by email
There have been a number of problems recently with Endnote files sent by email for inclusion in the Publications database. The solution appears to be to use the EndNote option File -- Compressed Library(.enlx) -- Create and Email

You may see what appears to be an error message, but this is just Endnote waiting for you to finish with Groupwise; it can be closed once the mail has been sent:
