Toilet humour and the worldwide sanitation crisis will both be centre stage on World Toilet Day on Saturday November 19. The SHARE consortium, led by LSHTM, has compiled an online gallery for the day to show the range of unhygienic and clean toilets used worldwide – from open defecation sites to composting loos and flush toilets. Today 2.6 billion people – 40 per cent of the world’s population – don’t have a safe place to go to the toilet, and 1.1 billion regularly defecate in the open.

SHARE is addressing poor sanitation through many research projects, including assessing the health impact of sanitation in Orissa, India, and exploring the best technologies and financing models to provide sanitation services in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
