The ‘Constructing a Literature Search Strategy Part 1 & Part 2’ sessions are aimed at any MSc student who has not attended one of the 2/3 hour long ‘Effective Literature Searching’ sessions earlier in the year (or any student who did attend but wants to have a ‘refresher session’).
These sessions are repeated on multiple days. You can choose to attend Part 1 and Part 2 on the same day as a two hour session or attend Part 1 on one day and then Part two on another day. Just choose whichever approach works best for your timetable!
The ‘Finding Grey Literature’ and ‘Accessing Data via the Library’ sessions are aimed at any student who needs to find this type of information for their MSc Projects.
The Lunchtime InfoSkills Sessions cover:
- Constructing a Literature Search Strategy. Part 1: search concepts, search terms & building your search
- Selecting search concepts and developing comprehensive lists of keywords/search terms
- Choosing the resources to search – going beyond Pubmed & Google (OVID Medline will be the main database used in these sessions)
- Using Boolean logic to structure an effective search
- How to use search options including truncation, wildcards and proximity searching

- Subject headings: what are they? Why do you need to use them? How do you include them in your search strategy?
- Using search filters and limits
- Running your search & transferring it across databases – what to look out for

- Finding Grey Literature
- Understanding why grey literature should be included in a literature review
- Different types of grey literature and where to find this kind of material
- How to take a ‘systematic’ approach to searching for grey literature
- Accessing Data via the Library
- an introduction to a range of statistical and spatial data available publicly, or via an LSHTM subscription
- practical exercises to access, search, manipulate, and export data from some of these sources
