Building eye research capacity across the Commonwealth

Research is essential for the advancement of medicine and health. Investing in research develops understanding of the scale and nature of a disease in a given population. It supports treatment innovation and knowledge of how to most effectively deliver and integrate treatment into a health system.

The Consortium is building eye research capacity across the Commonwealth by providing a number of clinical research fellowships at PhD and postdoctoral level, to applicants from low- and middle- income Commonwealth countries where there is a demonstrable need and the least opportunity for advancement.

About the PhD Research Fellowships:

These fellowships support individuals from LMICs through a three to four year PhD programme, which involves a project that addresses an important eye health question in their own country. The university for PhD registration may be local, if appropriate support is available, or at an international institution. The exact structure of the PhD training programmes varies a little by host institution, but usually includes training in research methodology, epidemiology or social science and statistics. Students have a principal supervisor and usually an advisory group to support them. The Fellowships provide a stipend, research costs, university fees, travel and meeting costs. Meet our PhD Research Fellows here.

About the Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships:

The post-doctoral research fellowships support more senior clinician-scientists to carry forward research relevant to their own hospital/institution/region. The Fellowship provides some salary support (to free up time from other commitments), research costs (such as a research assistant) and travel and meeting support. The fellow is supported by a mentor from one of the Consortium’s academic institutions. Meet our Post-Doctoral Research Fellows here.
