Read on to find out how it came about&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-251\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-Sam-Miles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-Sam-Miles.jpg 676w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-Sam-Miles-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/div>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Sam:\u00a0As well as working with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/research\/centres-projects-groups\/depth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEPTH<\/a> colleagues here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LSHTM<\/a> on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/research\/centres-projects-groups\/depth#access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0sexual and reproductive health and rights<\/a> (SRHR) for marginalised populations, and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/research\/centres-projects-groups\/this-sickle-cell-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voices and experiences of young people with sickle cell<\/a>, I have for a while now researched the relationship between sex and sexualities, digital technologies, and space. It&#8217;s work that I started for my PhD in 2013 and every year the themes it throws up feel even more relevant &#8211; how people find social or sexual relationships, how personal safety operates online and offline,\u00a0what community means for LGBT+ people, and how we integrate (or don&#8217;t integrate) technologies into our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">I was recently invited by\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/urbanpolitical.podigee.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The {Urban Political}<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0podcast to\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/urbanpolitical.podigee.io\/11-queer_urban_space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">give an interview<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0on dating apps and urban geographies. The {Urban Political} produces podcasts on \u2018contemporary urban issues with activists, scholars and policy-makers\u2019 that\u00a0aim to advance our understanding of urban environments and how we might make them more democratic.\u00a0<\/span>They wanted to discuss my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/0966369X.2017.1340874?tab=permissions&amp;scroll=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>\u00a0on the relations between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/333313365_Going_the_Distance_Locative_Dating_Technology_and_Queer_Male_Practice-Based_Identities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online dating apps<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/333313365_Going_the_Distance_Locative_Dating_Technology_and_Queer_Male_Practice-Based_Identities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">production of urban space<\/a>, especially with regards to sex and sexualities. I said yes because I was so intrigued by the questions presenter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhu-berlin.academia.edu%2FMarkusKip&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc625918ffe1a4fc3ea7108d7936e14e5%7C569df091b01340e386eebd9cb9e25814%7C0%7C0%7C637139973318678744&amp;sdata=Z%2BodtbK2zmxJKQEwSk5FAHepBwY8nY7hxfmI6WfuxEE%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Markus Kip\u00a0<\/a>posed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do apps like Grindr and Tinder make the city a more loving place?\u00a0<\/em><em>Do they make dating more safe for women or trans people?\u00a0<\/em><em>And do they cohere greater acceptance of queer cultures, or the opposite?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are important questions. When put to you by someone not in your head, as it were, they have the helpful effect of sharpening focus on what is really at stake when it comes to the reality (and future) of digital technology and the welfare of sexual minorities.<\/p>\n<p>People\u2019s lived experiences are important. Thinking about the consequences of changing physical environments through the use of dating and hook-up apps beyond simplistic readings of \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 offers us a real opportunity to think critically about what these platforms mean not\u00a0just\u00a0for\u00a0individual\u00a0users, but more\u00a0widely\u00a0for society, community and geopolitics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3708 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sexualityandthecityblog.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/01\/urban-political.png?w=358&amp;h=358\" alt=\"urban political\" width=\"358\" height=\"358\" \/>That\u2019s not all: in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urbanpolitical.podigee.io\/11-queer_urban_space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the podcast<\/a>\u00a0we also discuss what app companies do with the data that users provide (whether willingly or unknowingly), and what ethical boundaries are being tested in this kind of data sharing \u2013 as well as the ethics of app use itself. I\u2019ve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/gec3.12407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued before<\/a>\u00a0that locative media technologies have grown at such a rapid pace that\u00a0<em>mutually-agreed social codes for use<\/em>\u00a0are yet to catch up with the development of these sophisticated platforms, which can lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sexualityandthecityblog.wordpress.com\/2019\/07\/26\/not-my-type-queer-male-practice-based-identities-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clashing expectations between users<\/a>. I believe these (perfectly valid) tensions will be replicated and amplified across a wide range of social networks and \u2018smart\u2019 technologies in the near future as digital technologies become progressively more integrated into our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-246\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-2-by-Sam-Miles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-2-by-Sam-Miles.jpg 676w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/depth\/files\/2020\/01\/London-2-by-Sam-Miles-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for the question\u00a0\u2018what needs to happen at an individual, collective or technological level to make online dating more useful or pleasant?\u2019, there are any number of answers, and for me none of them are definitive. It\u2019s become clear over recent years that dating apps are not an alternative utopian world, free from the ugliness of \u2018real&#8217; life \u2013 numerous reports of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/sep\/29\/wltm-colour-blind-dating-app-racial-discrimination-grindr-tinder-algorithm-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racism<\/a>\u00a0(special mention for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/can-grindr-make-itself-less-racist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#KindrGrindr<\/a>),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2018\/12\/06\/grindr-was-first-big-dating-app-gay-men-now-its-falling-out-favor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">femmephobia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/feralfeminisms.com\/more-fats-more-femmes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fat-shaming<\/a>\u00a0on just Grindr alone exemplify exactly that. But maybe there is space for a future of sociality, solidarity and support for sexual minorities who network online. We already see these kinds of networks in action in queer organising, online communities, and support groups at various scales and in various guises. There is no reason why dating and hook-up apps cannot similarly be collectively co-opted to embrace more \u2018promiscuous\u2019\u00a0<strong>socialisation<\/strong>\u00a0to combat loneliness, more political\u00a0<strong>solidarity<\/strong>\u00a0with a range of queer identities and livelihoods, and more\u00a0<strong>support<\/strong>\u00a0for sexual rights agendas, whether they be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwantprepnow.co.uk\/prep-on-the-nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PrEP provision<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ippf.org\/blogs\/pride-2019-whats-changed-last-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sexual &amp; reproductive health rights<\/a>.
