Current Wellcome Trust Senior Fellows

Liz Corbett is a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow at LSHTM carrying out clinical research based in Blantyre, Malawi. Her research project is “ Community-led practical approach to lung health: development and evaluation of interventions to increase demands for, and access to, TB/HIV diagnosis and care in Blantyre, Malawi”. 

Rashida Ferrand is a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow at LSHTM (based in Zimbabwe) carrying out clinical research based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her research project is “Treatment support for older children and adolescents living with HIV: a household-randomised trial linked to evaluation of decentralised HIV testing and care in Harare, Zimbabwe”.

Andrew Prendergast is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at QMUL carrying out clinical research based in Harare, Zimbabwe. His research project is “The impact of cotrimoxazole on healthy birth and growth in rural Zimbabwe”. 

 

Matthew Burton is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow carrying out clinical research in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Moshi, Tanzania. His research project is “Controlling blinding Trachoma: Intervention and pathyophysiology studies for scarring disease in Ethiopia and Tanzania.”

Past Fellows

Ruramayi Rukanai was a Wellcome Trust Public Health and Tropical Medicine Training Fellow carrying out her PhD research based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her research project is “The impact of vertical HIV infection on child and adolescent skeletal development in Harare, Zimbabwe.”

Sunil Bhopal was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research in Goa, India. His research project is “Investigating early life stress in infants enrolled in SPRING intervention trial in rural India”.

Mutsa Bwakura-Dangarembizi was a Wellcome Trust Public Health and Tropical Medicine Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her research project is “Clinical outcomes, thymic output and long-term immune restoration in severely malnourished HIV-infected children”.

James Church was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Zimbabwe. His research project is “The impact of the intestinal environment on immunogenicity of oral vaccines in Zimbabwean infants”.

Nick Easom was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in The Gambia. His research project is “The NKG2D pathway in hepatitis B associated hepatocellular carcinoma in a highly endemic setting”.

Eliza Gil was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Mchinji, Malawi. Her research project is “Targeting neutrophil recruitment in pneumococcal meningitis”.

Nicola Longley was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her research project is “Cryptococcal antigen screening and targeted pre-emptive therapy in patients initiating ART: a prospective cohort study “

David Osrin was a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Mumbai, India. His research project is “Community resource centres to improve the health of  women and children in Mumbai slums: a cluster randomized controlled trial of a complex intervention”. 

Vikram Patel was a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow building on his pioneering research into adolescent mental health: PRIDE (PRemIum for aDolEscents)’.

Gabriele Pollara was a Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Lima, Peru. His research project is “Defining protective immunity to human tuberculosis”.

Helen Brotherton was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in The Gambia. Her research project is “Randomised controlled trial of early kangaroo mother care for hospitalised neonates <2000g in a low- income country”.

Alison Elliott was a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Entebbe, Uganda. Her research project is “Helminths and allergy in Uganda” and she is Principal Investigator on The Entebbe Mother and Baby Study (EMaBS) 

Harriet Mpairwe was a Wellcome Trust Public Health and Tropical Medicine Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Entebbe, Uganda. Her research project is “Study on parasitic infections and asthma in Uganda”.

Alison Price was a Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Training Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Karonga, Malawi. Her research project is, “Community-level fatal and non-fatal stroke surveillance: providing the tools for evaluating interventions in hypertension and stoke in sub-Saharan Africa”.

Anthony Scott was a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow carrying out clinical research based in Kilifi, Kenya. His research project is “Population impact of conjugate vaccine on pneumococcal transmission and disease in Kenya”.

Catherine Wedderburn was a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellow carrying out research based in Cape Town, South Africa. Her research project is “Neurodevelopmental effects of in utero HIV and ART exposure in children: a prospective cross-sectional structural and microstructuraI neuroimaging study.”
