Health\u00a0Policy and Planning<\/a>\u00a0and the organizers of the Third Global Symposium on\u00a0Health Systems Research<\/a> are pleased to issue a call for papers<\/a> for a special supplement on the theme of\u00a0“The\u00a0science and practice of people-centred health systems”.<\/i>\u00a0The theme for the call is also the theme of the Symposium.<\/p>\n

People-centred\u00a0health systems are founded on pro-people philosophies of social justice and\u00a0equity, recognize the role of social exclusion and inequities as determinants\u00a0of poor health, and\u00a0can also actively work to address them. They consider the\u00a0health needs and preferences of individuals, families and communities, and\u00a0create the channels through which these can be\u00a0articulated and realized. They\u00a0also recognize and actively progress people\u2019s rights to participate in and\u00a0determine how health systems are organized, resources are allocated, and\u00a0services are\u00a0delivered.<\/p>\n

The idea\u00a0of people-centred health systems also encompasses the rights and needs of\u00a0people who work in and for the health system in various roles \u2013 as carers,\u00a0health workers,\u00a0advocates, administrators, planners and researchers. It also\u00a0recognizes that important decisions that determine health system performance at\u00a0all levels are made by specific people (individuals\u00a0and groups in the public\u00a0and private sectors) \u2013 highlighting the importance of collective duties toward\u00a0the advancement of health, and of identifying responsibility and ensuring accountability\u00a0for\u00a0health system outcomes.<\/p>\n

Finally, the\u00a0concept of people-centred health systems also acknowledges that health systems\u00a0operate in broader social, political and economic contexts that are of\u00a0human\u00a0creation, and the need to respond to all factors that affect health rather than\u00a0focusing only on biomedically driven solutions.<\/p>\n

Full manuscripts on\u00a0the theme of \u201cthe science and practice of people centred health systems\u201d should\u00a0be submitted <\/a>to\u00a0Health Policy and\u00a0Planning<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>by\u00a018 November 2013<\/b>. \u00a0Original research\u00a0articles as well as review papers are invited. Submissions that have a first-author who is a resident in a low and middle-income country are particularly encouraged.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Accepted papers will be published as a special journal supplement\u00a0prior to the Symposium<\/a>, which will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, 30 September – 3 October, 2014.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0full text of the call<\/a>\u00a0contains suggested topics, details of the selection process and author information.<\/p>\n
