Helping to improve access to eye care across the world
The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) VISION 2020 workshops are a flagship for VISION 2020 – the global programme to eliminate avoidable blindness by 2020.
The workshops, run by IAPB and regional stakeholders deliver short courses to eye health professionals across the world. As a result of the programme, many countries have prevention of blindness plans, and access to eye care services has improved for hundreds of millions of people.
The IAPB VISION 2020 workshops will make a critical contribution to the new WHO Action Plan for the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment 2014 – 19.
IAPB offices will work with regional stakeholders – Ministries of health, training institutions and non-governmental institutions (NGOS) – to form a response to the action plan. The workshops will be an important component of this.
ICEH devised the workshops and we continue to provide financial and administrative support for the programme.
Impact of the VISION 2020 workshops
Since 1999, more than 200 workshops have been held across:
- South America
- Latin America
- Eastern Mediterranean
- Western Pacific
- South East Asia
Some of the key successes of the programme include:
Brazil: After annual community eye health workshops for resident ophthalmologists, the workshop content has been integrated into the national curriculum for residents.
China: The programme initiated coordination workshops between the government and NGOs working in eye health. At the last meeting an INGO representative was identified to liaise directly with government in planning and implementing eye health activities.
Indonesia: Following workshops attended by neonatologists and ophthalmologists, national guidelines for prevention and treatment of ROP are now in place for the first time.
Africa: Workshops in Africa have been at the forefront of taking a health systems approach to eye care. Guidelines for the integration of eye health into primary health care have been developed.
Global: Recently, a global workshop was held in India to develop research priorities for the elimination of avoidable blindness by the year 2020.
Staff at ICEH played a key role in planning the workshop and guiding discussion. Key outcomes were 10 global research priorities ranging from investigation of interventions for the control of specific conditions, through to health systems research. Recommendations were also made for building research capacity across all regions.
