We have undertaken five large clinical trials that have explored the use of postoperative azithromycin, alternative suture materials, the role of epilation in mild disease and a comparison of different operation types and the use of postoperative doxycycline. Our research into posterior lamellar versus bilamellar tarsal rotation surgery was described as the most important work in the area in two decades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Antibiotics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alongside Stronger-SAFE we have conducted several studies into the rational use of azithromycin, looking at who should be given it and how frequently they should receive it, which has informed the current trial<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Infection pathology:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have explored how the human immune system reacts to chlamydial infection in order to define biomarkers for progressive disease and to identify potential therapeutic targets for progressive scarring. This has included genetic analysis of people undergoing trichiasis surgery and new methods for rapid diagnosis of <em>C.
