Research Capacity Projects<\/p>\n

Research and evidence supports the delivery of eye care services. To ensure we have high-quality, locally-relevant research in the areas of greatest eye health need, it is vital to strengthen research capacity in LMICs.<\/p>\n

ICEH has supported the strengthening of eye health research capacity with many partners in countries globally.<\/p>\n

Since 2010 we have had 28 research degree students (registered at LSHTM) who have been awarded their PhDs; 17 of these are nationals of LMICs. Of people holding PhDs in the field of ophthalmology \/ eye health from the Africa region, ICEH has trained the majority of them (around 80%).<\/p>\n

We led the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium<\/a>, which resulted in an approximate doubling of the number of research active clinicians trained to PhD level from the Africa region.<\/p>\n

Several of our other activities support research capacity, including our Master\u2019s Course<\/a>, free online courses<\/a> and our capacity strengthening networks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

African Centre for AI Excellence<\/p>\n

Currently there are no African institutions or African researchers leading ophthalmic AI development and research programmes. Our aim is to change this by establishing Africa\u2019s first Centre of Excellence for Ophthalmic AI research.<\/p>\n
