This is despite concerted international efforts to tackle the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trachoma is caused by repeated infections with the bacteria <em>C. Trachomatis<\/em>. Multiple infections lead to inflammation and the hardening of the inside of the eyelid, eventually leading to the eyelashes turning inwards. This can be extremely painful, and if left unchecked can lead to blindness through the scarring of the eye. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stronger-SAFE is a&nbsp;Wellcome Trust-funded project that aims to develop and test new, more effective interventions and treatment approaches for the disease in Ethiopia.
