The group training sessions take place on:<\/strong>
Part 1 – step by step literature searching:<\/strong> relevant to all types of MSc Project.
<\/strong>Monday 18th May 10:00 to 11:30.
Friday 22nd May 15:00 to 16:30.
Weds 27th May 15:00 to 16:30.
Mon 22nd June 13:00 to 14:30.
Thursday 25th June 10:00 to 11:30.<\/p>\n

All the above Part 1 sessions are the same \u2013 you only need to book on one session.<\/p>\n

Part 2 – advanced literature searching<\/strong>: relevant to literature review type MSc Projects (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, policy review, meta-analysis).
Tuesday 19th May 15:00 to 16:30.
Thursday 21st May 10:00 to 11:30.
Thursday 28th May 10:00 to 11:30.
Tuesday 23rd June 15:00 to 16:30.
Friday 26th June 13:00 to 14:30.<\/p>\n

All the above Part 2 sessions are the same \u2013 you only need to book on one session if relevant to your MSc Project.<\/p>\n

Who should attend?<\/strong>
Part 1 sessions: any MSc students working on their project proposal or their project – this is a repeat \/ refresher of the Term 1 & Term 2 sessions.<\/p>\n

Part 2 sessions: any MSc students undertaking a literature review type MSc Project (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, policy review, meta-analysis), or anyone wanting to further develop their literature searching skills – this was not covered in the Term 1 sessions, but it is a refresher of the Term 2 Part 2 sessions<\/strong>.

<\/strong>MSc students (both \u2018intensive\u2019 & \u2018distance learning\u2019 programmes) who did not have literature searching sessions scheduled in your MSc Programme timetable or were not able to attend the Term 2 sessions: we recommend that you sign up these sessions.<\/p>\n

MSc students who have already attended Effective Literature Searching training sessions, or any DL student who is signed up to \/ has attended the Intermediate InfoSkills mini-modules, and want to have a refresher session, you are also welcome to sign up.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT NOTES<\/strong>:
1. If you have not attended<\/strong> any literature searching sessions before, and you are interested in Part 2, then you must have attended Part 1 first (otherwise Part 2 may not make sense!).
2. If you have attended a literature searching session as part of your MSc Programme, you might prefer to re-watch the recording of that session on your MSc Programme\u2019s Moodle page, or the recording of an earlier Part 1 session here<\/a>.
3. These sessions are repeated on each day listed above. Just book on whichever session works best for your timetable \/ time-zone.<\/p>\n

Part 1 covers:
<\/strong>Constructing a literature search strategy.
– Developing search concepts, search terms & building your search.
– Selecting search concepts & keywords\/search terms.
– Choosing the right resources to search.
– Using Boolean logic to structure an effective search.
– How to use search operators (including truncation & wildcards). OVID Medline will be the main database used in these sessions.
– Using basic search filters and date limits.
– Finding full text \u2013 what if LSHTM library doesn\u2019t have what I need?<\/p>\n

Part 2 covers:<\/strong>
– Using proximity searching and subject headings: what are they? Why do you need to use them? How do you include them in your search strategy?
– Using advanced search filters and limits.
– Running your search & transferring it across databases.
– Finding full text \u2013 what if LSHTM library doesn\u2019t have what I need?
– Planning, methodology & managing your search results.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT: a note about \u20181 to 1 sessions\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(for feedback on literature searches for systematic review type projects).
Bookings are now available for 1 to 1 sessions on the\u00a0student online booking system<\/a>\u00a0. If you are carrying out a literature review type project (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, rapid review, policy review), then you will be able to book one 30 minute session to discuss your own search strategy for your MSc Project. We recommend that you save this until you are working on your MSc Project, as we can only offer one 30 minute session per student. You will need to send us a draft of your search strategy at least 1 working day before the 1 to 1 meeting so that we can review your search and provide focussed advice in the session. Full details and prerequisites are provided when booking online.<\/p>\n
