Now We Must\u201d serves as a time to recognize progress made in saving lives and to address the persistent challenges that prevent a malaria-free world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease, known to be spread to humans through the bites of infected female anopheles&#8217; mosquitos. Though the tools to prevent and cure malaria exist, there is a need for sustained funding,&nbsp;research,&nbsp;and community action to eradicate malaria globally.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To mark the date, we are offering a glimpse into the LSHTM archives, spotlighting&nbsp;a few of&nbsp;the stories involved in malaria history, understanding, and ongoing development.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;buckle up as we venture into the story of one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mosquito Box:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"376\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Image of old square wooden box, the lid is slightly ajar making visible 4 sections. \" class=\"wp-image-10397\" title=\"Manson Mosquito Box\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1.png 376w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-1-300x285.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sir Patrick Manson Mosquito Box <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Though on first appearance you may see nothing but an old wooden box that could have been found in a grandparents attic, this nifty piece of tech is actually a Mosquito transportation box designed by Dr Louis&nbsp;Westerna&nbsp;Sambon&nbsp;in 1900, used to transport malaria-infected mosquitos from Rome to London. The box would originally have&nbsp;contained&nbsp;four gauze cylinders (one in each of the square compartments) for mosquito storage; only one of these remains.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;pesky&nbsp;little insects, once safely transported&nbsp;to England, were used by Sir Patrick Manson (founder of LSHTM) in his&nbsp;1900 malaria experiments.&nbsp;His research subjects, including his son,&nbsp;were bitten by infected mosquitoes and developed malaria.&nbsp;They&nbsp;were quickly treated with quinine and recovered from malaria. The outcome of the experiment&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;to the world the mosquito-malaria theory.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blood Slides:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"396\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-2.png\" alt=\"Image of wooden box with trays of glass microscope slides, the slides have samples which appear red and yellow in colour\" class=\"wp-image-10398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-2.png 396w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-2-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ronald Ross blood slides box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sir Ronald Ross is credited with proving mosquitoes as a vector for the spread of malaria, research for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for&nbsp;Physiology or&nbsp;Medicine, becoming the first Briton&nbsp;to achieve such, in 1902. This \u2018discovery\u2019&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;borne&nbsp;from nowhere; Ross conducted meticulous work on malaria transmission including&nbsp;observing&nbsp;malarial blood samples under the microscope to learn more about the disease.&nbsp;This elegant wooden box is home to many of his historic slide collection&nbsp;dating back to the 1890\u2019s, which has been preserved by the LSHTM&nbsp;Archives&nbsp;Service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2015,&nbsp;the&nbsp;archive team worked with experts&nbsp;(staff from the&nbsp;Public Health England Malaria Reference Laboratory and LSHTM Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory)&nbsp;to&nbsp;re-examine&nbsp;the slides under a microscope.&nbsp;While&nbsp;staining techniques for slides \u2013 for&nbsp;example&nbsp;the use of gentian violet \u2013 has changed&nbsp;considerably since&nbsp;the 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century,&nbsp;the slides were remarkably still&nbsp;viable&nbsp;with oocysts and gametocytes&nbsp;visible.&nbsp;The results were photographed under the microscope by Cheryl Whitehorn.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"262\" height=\"196\" data-id=\"10399\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10399\"\/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"246\" height=\"184\" data-id=\"10400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10400\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Miss Simpson Mosquito&nbsp;Hood:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"210\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-5.png\" alt=\"Greyscale image of a woman wearing a mosquito hood\" class=\"wp-image-10401\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lady Mary Simpson modelling her own &#8220;Mosquito Hood&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>With mosquitos&nbsp;established&nbsp;as the transmitter of malaria, early 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century scientific attitudes shifted to the prevention and treatment of malaria. One such area of interest was protection of the human body from mosquitos,&nbsp;operating&nbsp;on&nbsp;the simple philosophy that&nbsp;in order to&nbsp;transmit&nbsp;malaria infected mosquitos needed to bite&nbsp;the potential patient. And so came the rise of the \u2018physical barrier\u2019;&nbsp;mosquito nets, curtains and hats which blocked access to the body. Though likely not the only woman&nbsp;to involve herself in designing such barriers, Lady Mary Simpson is notable for her&nbsp;persistence.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lady Mary Simpson&nbsp;invented her \u2018Mosquito Hood\u2019 which she claimed could provide protection for those working in tropical climes.&nbsp;The hood was designed to be lightweight, \u2018comfortable to sleep in\u2019 and&nbsp;easily&nbsp;\u2018turned back\u2019 for smoking or shooting.&nbsp;She promoted the use of the hood during the war, urging Ross to advocate for her to the&nbsp;War Office&nbsp;and sending samples of the hood to the British Army, as well as writing widely about the design and its advantages.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"367\" height=\"280\" data-id=\"10403\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7.png 367w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-7-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"358\" height=\"276\" data-id=\"10402\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6.png 358w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-6-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As far as we know, Simpson&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;have much success with the hood. However, her determination and persistence, especially at a time in which women\u2019s ideas were valued less&nbsp;than men\u2019s,&nbsp;highlight the effort and advocacy of many less&nbsp;recognised&nbsp;individuals in the history of malaria research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leeson\u2019s&nbsp;Expeditions<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"225\" data-id=\"10404\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8.png\" alt=\"Image of trees and a stream \" class=\"wp-image-10404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8.png 303w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-8-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It may come as no surprise given Manson\u2019s transport of them from Italy, that the cold and rainy environment of Britain&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;ideal for mosquitos.&nbsp;<em>Anopheles&#8217;<\/em>, thrive in warm&nbsp;temperatures&nbsp;above 20 degrees Celsius (68 F)&nbsp;and humid environments&nbsp;most often found&nbsp;in tropical regions&nbsp;across Africa and&nbsp;Papua New Guinea. In 2024,&nbsp;the WHO African Region was home to 95% of malaria cases (265 million) and 95% (579 000) of malaria deaths.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"297\" height=\"225\" data-id=\"10405\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10405\"\/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"303\" height=\"225\" data-id=\"10406\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-10.png 303w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2026\/04\/image-10-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In 1936, Major HS Leeson, an entomologist working at the&nbsp;school, set off on an expedition to study malarial mosquitoes in East Africa.
