{"id":104,"date":"2014-02-03T15:02:13","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T15:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=104"},"modified":"2014-02-03T15:02:13","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T15:02:13","slug":"spotlight-on-the-librarys-report-series-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2014\/02\/03\/spotlight-on-the-librarys-report-series-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight on the Library\u2019s Report Series Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One day last week, for a bit of light relief from staring at my computer screen, I decided to browse through some of the volumes from the Library\u2019s Report\u00a0Series Collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/blogphoto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-108\" alt=\"blogphoto\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/blogphoto-300x170.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/blogphoto-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/blogphoto.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was\u00a0flicking through some pages\u00a0of\u00a0the &#8216;Report on the Work of the School\u2019 for 1931\/32,\u00a0 and I found a few words\u00a0written by\u00a0W. W. Jameson (Dean of the School at that time) talking about the School\u2019s first professional librarian, Mr C. C. Barnard:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA library\u2019s most important function, he observes, to which all others should be subservient, is to act as the means of getting the right book into the hands of the right reader&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well I can\u2019t disagree with that! But the Library manages a few more functions beyond that nowadays. We certainly have more than just books available, and one of our lesser known\u00a0collections is the Report Series\u00a0Collection.<\/p>\n<p><i>So what is in the Report Series\u00a0Collection?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Report Series Collection\u00a0is a print collection which includes series containing statistical data, morbidity and mortality statistics, and some select\u00a0annual reports. It is not a collection of one-off reports on specific subjects &#8211; these are treated as books or pamphlets.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few examples of\u00a0report series\u00a0we hold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amongst our UK &amp; Ireland reports we have\u00a0the Registrar-General\u2019s Statistical Review of England and Wales from 1921\u00a0 and the\u00a0Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages in England and Wales from 1838. We hold similar titles for Scotland and Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>We also hold various volumes from the Censuses of England and Wales from 1801 to 2001,\u00a0along with\u00a0some census reports for Scotland and Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>We have the School\u2019s Annual Report (previously entitled \u2018Report on the Work of the School\u2019) from 1924\/25 onwards.<\/li>\n<li>Amongst our international reports you can find the Annual Report from the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from 1929\u00a0and the Annual Report of\u00a0the East African Virus Research Institute from 1950-1976.<\/li>\n<li>We also hold\u00a0a selection of\u00a0statistical series from international organisations such as the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the United Nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Where can I find the Library\u2019s Report Series\u00a0Collection?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Reports covering the UK &amp; Ireland are on open access in the Periodicals Room in the Library.\u00a0Our international reports are held in the Library&#8217;s basement store and can be ordered from the Library Enquiries Desk. As with all our collections, you can search for specific titles on the library catalogue.<\/p>\n<p><i>Can I borrow them?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>All items in our Report Series\u00a0Collection are for reference within the Library &#8211;
