In the last academic year LSHTM authors produced 126 Open Access research papers which were paid from Wellcome Trust, RCUK, COAF and the School Open Access Fund at a total cost of \u00a3255,391 . \u00a0The average cost of an article processing charge (APC) was just under \u00a31,700. \u00a0So at that price, it is understandable that the School \u2015 and our funders \u2015 want to get what<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2015\/08\/euro-427528_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1849 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2015\/08\/euro-427528_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"euro-427528_1920\" width=\"330\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2015\/08\/euro-427528_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2015\/08\/euro-427528_1920-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2015\/08\/euro-427528_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a> we pay for.<\/p>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0 open access is desirable in itself, making articles freely available to the widest possible audience. But additionally, funders including the Wellcome Trust require research papers to be published under a <u><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" target=\"_blank\">CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution-only) license<\/a>. <\/u><\/p>\n<p>This means that, provided appropriate attribution is given,\u00a0there is no restriction on the article being used for commercial or non-commercial purposes, or for creating a \u2018derivative\u2019 \u2014 a transformed or built-upon version of the article. Though researchers may wonder why they should allow <em>commercial<\/em> use of their work, the Wellcome Trust argues that some kinds of use, such as translation, or data and text mining, are much more likely to become viable if the added value of such services can be recouped.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, some researchers are unaware that licenses prohibiting such use (for example <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/4.0\/\" target=\"_blank\">CC-BY-NC-ND<\/a>) do not meet funders\u2019 requirements and could result in funding being withheld. Ideally, publishers would make this clear to authors at the point where open access is requested. However, this does not always happen, and the Library then needs to contact the publishers and the authors so as to negotiate a retrospective change to the license. It often takes us time and perseverance to get the change made.<\/p>\n<p>So the rule is: always select the CC-BY Attribution-only license when choosing the open access option. \u00a0You should also opt for an article to be deposited by the publisher in the\u00a0free full-text archive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\">PubMedCentral<\/a> within six months.<\/p>\n<p>As explained in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2015\/03\/30\/wellcome-trust-requirements-open-access\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post<\/a>, The Wellcome Trust monitors papers and can impose penalties including withholding the final ten per cent of the grant.
