This is a joint diary between a married couple, Geoffrey and Amy Carpenter, who lived and worked in Uganda in the 1920s researching sleeping sickness.<!--more--><br \/>\nThe diary starts in 1919 with the engagement of Geoffrey and Amy, her maiden name was Peter and this is how he refers to her throughout the diary. They got engaged in Fowey in Cornwall and revisited in 1926, where there is a photo in the diary of them by the engagement stone. Geoffrey writes \u2018Where the best thing in the world happened to me \u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/02\/diary1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-197\" alt=\"diary1\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/02\/diary1-221x300.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/02\/diary1-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/02\/diary1-755x1024.jpg 755w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/02\/diary1.jpg 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';color: #444444\"> There are news clippings of the engagement announcement and also a poem written by Geoffrey entitled &#8216;Peter, my rock&#8217;, and then an invitation and news clippings on their wedding on 30th Dec 1919.
