2015 has\u00a0been a very successful year for LSHTM Research, not only have we substantially increased the number of records we hold and the number downloads we have received we have also obtained new types of research for the repository as well.<\/p>\n

In terms of the number of research items\u00a0– we’ve deposited\u00a03,349<\/strong>\u00a0new records<\/span>\u00a0into the research repository with over 50%<\/strong> of those items being open access and\/or full text. This is compared to\u00a0last\u00a0year when\u00a02,891 i<\/span>tems were deposited and\u00a046% was open access – an increase of\u00a0458 records.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0have now\u00a0harvested 291 of these podcasts from Soundcloud and they’ve received nearly 28,000 downloads over the past year. The following table is of the top 10 most downloaded. Overall the research appearing in Research Online\u00a0has had a tremendous number of interest from the Internet – over a million downloads and over 4 million hits. This is likely to be down to our repository being indexed by a number of services such as Google Scholar, SHARE research<\/a>, One REPO Demo<\/a>, CORE (COnnecting REpositories)<\/a>,\u00a0BASE – Bielefeld Academic Search Engine<\/a>\u00a0but also the\u00a0DART-Europe E-theses Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The most downloaded item in 2015\u00a0witnessed a\u00a0huge jump in downloads, receiving\u00a03,260 downloads and 370 hits. The explanation for this jump was a Guardian newspaper article on its findings\u00a0which appeared late in 2015 but which did not link to the published version of the paper in the journal (because it was behind a paywall and asking for $35.95) but linked to the open access final draft version of the paper which one of the authors deposited into Research Online. The paper is a great example of the power of open access and research repositories.<\/p>\n

The rest of the top ten is available below – and as you can see 5 out of the ten are doctoral theses which again proves the worth of a research repository but also the research carried out by our students at the School. These are usually described as “grey literature” but institutional\u00a0repositories\u00a0are opening up this literature to the world.<\/p>\n

Neural circuits were digitally reconstructed from serial section transmission electron micrographs through an abdominal segment of the nervous system. This image shows a lateral view of neurones and neuronal synapses in the neuropil (area in the grey matter of the central nervous system where neurones form connections with each other) of a segment of the nerve cord. Neural circuits were digitally reconstructed from serial section transmission electron micrographs through an abdominal segment of the nervous system. This image shows a lateral view of neurones and neuronal synapses in the neuropil (area in the grey matter of the central nervous system where neurones form connections with each other) of a segment of the nerve cord. A single axon from a sensory neurone that senses vibration (a chordotonal) is visible in yellow. Each coloured line belongs to the skeletonised representation of a neuronal branch (arbor). The points of contact between two neurones, the synapses, are shown in solid blue (input side) and solid red (output side). The transparent orange spheres represent labelled points of interest on the skeletons of the neurones, such as the presence of mitochondria and other features.
