Fortunately, as the bomb struck at 10.45pm, only four people &#8211; G.S Parkinson, K. M. Shaw, W. Gurr and W. Farr \u2013 were present and all escaped unscathed. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the School. It is estimated that a sixth of the School building was damaged, from the effects of the bomb and its resulting fire; a fire that was not put out until the morning due to lack of available firemen.<\/p>\n<p>The basement of the Malet Street wing, and the departments of Applied Physiology, Chemistry, Parasitology and Public Health were destroyed. More devastating news hit the School\u2019s Museum, who in hope of protecting their most valuable objects from the Blitz, had stored them in the basement \u2013 ironically this is where the most damage occurred and had the objects remained in the Museum they would have been saved.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2612\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Bomb-Damage-Workshops-lavatories-7-equipment-etc-in-basement.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2612\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2612\" class=\"wp-image-2612 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Bomb-Damage-Workshops-lavatories-7-equipment-etc-in-basement-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Bomb damage to the workshops, basement &amp; lavatories.\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Bomb-Damage-Workshops-lavatories-7-equipment-etc-in-basement-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Bomb-Damage-Workshops-lavatories-7-equipment-etc-in-basement-768x581.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Bomb-Damage-Workshops-lavatories-7-equipment-etc-in-basement-1024x774.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bomb damage to the workshops, basement &amp; lavatories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although devastating, the School embraced the \u2018Blitz Spirit\u2019 and continued with its teachings. By the Monday the School was open again and teaching the short course for medical officers, even though the School was offered teaching space with Cambridge University, it was decided to remain in Keppel Street.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2610\" style=\"width: 128px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Katherine-Shaw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2610\" class=\"wp-image-2610 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Katherine-Shaw-118x300.jpg\" alt=\"Katherine Shaw in 1957-58\" width=\"118\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Katherine-Shaw-118x300.jpg 118w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2016\/05\/Katherine-Shaw.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 118px) 100vw, 118px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katherine Shaw in 1957-58<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The bomb also led to a member of staff, Katherine Shaw, receiving an MBE for her \u2018courageous behaviour and presence of mind\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> during the explosion. Shaw joined the School in 1929 as the first personal assistant to the Professor of Public Health, Sir Wilson Jameson, and was then made the personal assistant of Sir Andrew Balfour, the first director of the School. Shaw also worked alongside, Major Greenwood and Professor Leiper.
