Join us during 16-20th January 2017 for the following events.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Monday 16 January<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Requirements and Solutions for Data Sharing<br \/>\n11.00-13.00.\u00a0SOAS &#8211; Room 4426 (Main Building, 4th Floor)<\/h3>\n<p>This seminar will share best practice in the preparation, anonymisation and documentation of research\u00a0data, and discuss how you can analyse and interrogate your data more effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Guest Speakers:<\/p>\n<p><em>Mark Elliot, UK Anonymisation Network<\/em><br \/>\nMark will explore the main strategies and considerations for data anonymisation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Veerle Van den Eynden, UK Data Archive, University of Essex<\/em><br \/>\nVeerle will describe the various tasks that researchers should perform when preparing data for sharing, including documentation preparation, format conversion, rights clearance, etc. and the time\/resources that should be allocated to each task. Each speaker will provide a case study of a specific research project, describing the approach they took to gather data, practical challenges encountered and how these were addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Case Studies will be provided by the following researchers:<\/p>\n<p><em>Carlos Oya, Reader in the Political Economy of Development, SOAS<\/em><br \/>\nCarlos will discuss the use of computer-assisted interviewing and his experience of using Survey Solutions in research.<\/p>\n<p><em>Keith Tomlin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Disease Control, LSHTM<\/em><br \/>\nKeith will discuss his work in the IDEAS project to perform a modular household survey in Ethiopia and the evaluation process that led to the choice of CSPro.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dr Chrissy Roberts, Assistant Professor of Human Genetics, LSHTM<\/em><br \/>\nChrissy will talk about Open Data Kit (ODK) and its use in research at the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>NO BOOKING NECESSARY. JUST TURN UP!<\/p>\n<h2>Wednesday 18 January<\/h2>\n<h3>Shifting Perspectives on Research Data<br \/>\n14.00-15.30, SOAS Library, Room E17<\/h3>\n<p>Guest Speakers:<\/p>\n<p><em>Lauren Gawne, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Endangered Language Documentation Programme, SOAS.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Talking about data: An introduction to the state of the field in Linguistics&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nLauren &#8216;s research focuses on the use of gesture and language in Tibetan varieties spoken in Nepal.\u00a0She will discuss how notions of\u00a0research reproducibility have developed in her field and report on a survey of data management practice in\u00a0the linguistics community and its impact on research writing. Her talk\u00a0will\u00a0offer practical suggestions on how methodology description can be improved in research.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chris Grundy, Assistant Professor of GIS, LSHTM.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cDifferent perspectives on research data management &#8211; crowd sourcing and institutions\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em>Chris will discuss the opportunities and challenges of crowd sourcing research data, and they ways in which data protocols can respond to these developments. He will also explore how to think about research data from an institutional perspective.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alessandro Provetti, Director of the Birkbeck Institute for Data Analytics<\/em><br \/>\nAlessandro will discuss his research in the field of\u00a0Social Network Analysis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/shifting-perspectives-on-research-data-tickets-30921212178\">BOOK YOUR PLACE NOW!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Thursday 19 January<\/h2>\n<h3>Funder and Publisher Approaches to Research Data<br \/>\n14.30-16.00, SOAS Library, Room E17<\/h3>\n<p><em>Fiona Murphy, Senior Associate at Murphy Mitchell Consulting.<\/em><br \/>\nFiona will speak about the data publishing landscape, and the ways in which data is becoming increasingly important from a publishers perspectives.<\/p>\n<p><em>David Carr, Programme Manager \u2013 Open Research, Wellcome Trust<\/em><br \/>\nDavid will speak\u00a0about the Wellcome Trust\u2019s policy on data sharing, and their approach to working with the broader researcher community to address the challenges of data sharing.
