The Library is undertaking a project to catalogue a collection of around 3000 pamphlets, all of which were previously inaccessible to users and stored away inside a vault. The pamphlets date from 1900 onwards and cover a range of subjects which make up the\u00a0Barnard classification scheme, with principle strengths in Nutrition (BEX), Alcohol and Alcoholism (GFD), AIDS (HBZ), Mycobacteria (JC), Malaria (LF), Cancer (PM), Public Health UK (SOFG), Public Health – non UK (SOFZ), and Family Planning (UTT). My colleagues Cathy, Andre, Jennifer, and I plan to use this blog to share information about the collection as and when we discover interesting material to write about. We hope Library users find the blogs informative, and we hope they might also consider the pamphlets as a potential source of information when it comes to their own research.

<\/a><\/p>\n

Foods For Your Family (BEX.74)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Since beginning work on Nutrition we\u2019ve uncovered lots of literature originating\u00a0from countries outside the UK. Foods For Your Family (BEX.74), for example, is a 1952 pamphlet produced by the Puerto Rican Department of Education and designed to promote the benefits of a balanced diet amongst rural populations. \u2018The body is like a machine\u2019, the pamphlet claims, before explaining, \u2018[you] too are the owner of one of these machines [\u2026] given to you by God for you to use and take care of\u2019. Accordingly, the pamphlet advises eating plenty of fruits as a way of getting \u2018all the Vitamin C you need for one day\u2019. \u2018[When] people do not get enough Vitamin C\u2019, it continues, \u2018[\u2026] they tire easily and feel lifeless\u2019. West Indian cherries, mammee apples, papaws, mangos, guavas, and soursops in varying quantities all constitute approved and very exotic sources of Vitamin C!<\/p>\n

Other pamphlets in the Nutrition class include those concerning the dietary habits of UK civilians during WW2. Gertrude Wagner\u2019s Vegetable Consumption in Four Selected Towns: A Survey Made for the Ministry of Food (BEX.42) provides interesting analysis on families and their seemingly ambivalent attitudes towards their greens. According to statistics presented in the pamphlet, top of the vegetable \u2018dislike list’ is the humble marrow, closely followed by parsnips, watercress, leeks, and French beans. And the reasons given for not serving vegetables every day? \u2018Too expensive\u2019; \u2018Too busy washing, cleaning, working\u2019; \u2018Do not like or care for vegetables\u2019; \u2018Housewife ill or unable to shop or cook\u2019 . . .<\/p>\n
