{"id":3512,"date":"2017-02-17T10:52:18","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T10:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=3512"},"modified":"2017-02-18T09:55:16","modified_gmt":"2017-02-18T09:55:16","slug":"feeling-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2017\/02\/17\/feeling-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeling alert?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As my colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2017\/01\/31\/cataloguing-the-library-archives-services-pamphlet-collection\/\">Chris said in this blog<\/a> a couple of weeks ago, we are in the process of cataloguing 3000 pamphlets that were locked away in a vault for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s one: <strong><em>\u201cOn Being Tired\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, by a Scottish physician named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Sir-Thomas-Lauder-Brunton-1st-Baronet\">Sir Thomas Lauder Brunton<\/a>, published in 1909.<\/p>\n<p>In his pamphlet, Brunton notes that the signs of weariness first appear in the eyes, which \u201close their lustre\u201d and \u201csink into the head\u201d. Then \u201cthe head tends to droop, the back to bend, the arms to fall helplessly down, and the knees to bend under the weight of the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2017\/02\/Eyes7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"637\" height=\"472\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3534\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2017\/02\/Eyes7.jpg\" alt=\"Alert eyes and weary eyes\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2017\/02\/Eyes7.jpg 637w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2017\/02\/Eyes7-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although Brunton finds that the most frequent cause of weariness is \u201cexcessive muscular exertion\u201d, he also recognises that \u201cdepressing emotions, such as worry or sorrow, may produce both an expression of weariness and a sensation of weariness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that Reading Week has helped\u00a0LSHTM staff and students feel less worried and weary, more happy and vigorous, and ready for the second half of term.<\/p>\n<p>[P.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lauder_Brunton\">Thomas Lauder Brunton<\/a> (1844-1916) was known for more than a pamphlet on fatigue. \u00a0Wikipedia tells me it was he who discovered that amyl nitrite could relieve the pain of angina pectoris.
