To commemorate International Women’s Day (March 8th) here are a few books from the LSHTM Library collection focussing on women’s health and women’s rights.<\/p>\n

\"Book:<\/a>Women and health<\/strong> by <\/em>Marlene B. Goldman and Maureen C. Hatch<\/em> <\/strong>(Academic Press, 2000).
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

A comprehensive work with an international perspective. Includes physical issues and conditions along with some of the social and behavioural factors that affect health.<\/p>\n

Aimed at academics, public health workers and physicians.<\/p>\n

\"Book:<\/a>Handbook of women’s health : an evidence-based approach<\/strong>\u00a0edited by Jo Ann Rosenfeld<\/strong><\/em> (Cambridge University Press, 2001).<\/p>\n

Emphasises collaborative care between the person and their healthcare provider. Sections include preventive care, psychosocial health, sexuality, genitourinary medicine, breast disorders, psychological disorders, and common medical problems.<\/p>\n

In this classic piece of feminist writing, author bell hooks argues for the end of gender oppression and a fundamental transformation of society.<\/p>\n

Report of a UN study conducted with over 10,000 men in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea exploring the prevalence of men\u2019s use of violence against women and the complex interplay of factors that makes it more or less likely to occur.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

American journalist and author Peggy Orenstein reflects on interviews with psychologists, academics, experts and over 70 young women to offer insights into current sexuality and sexual practice.<\/p>\n

“Did today’s young women have more freedom than their mothers to shape their sexual encounters, more influence and more control within them?”, Orenstein asks.\u00a0 “Were they better able to resist stigma, better equipped to explore joy? And if not, why not?”<\/p>\n
