{"id":5215,"date":"2018-06-14T11:35:15","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T11:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=5215"},"modified":"2018-06-14T11:35:15","modified_gmt":"2018-06-14T11:35:15","slug":"world-sickle-cell-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2018\/06\/14\/world-sickle-cell-day\/","title":{"rendered":"World Sickle Cell Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To coincide with World Sickle Cell Day (19 June) the Library currently has a display of books in the Reading Room on sickle cell disease (SCD) and other blood diseases. SCD affects millions of people worldwide and is a lifelong condition that can be fatal. SCD\u00a0mainly affects people of African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Eastern Mediterranean and Asian origin. It is also one of the main causes of premature death in children under 5 yrs in several African countries. SCD is caused by an inherited\u00a0 faulty gene which affects the haemoglobin\u00a0and results in distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The most serious type is sickle cell anaemia.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of SCD include painful episodes called sickle cell crises, increased risk of serious infections, and anaemia causing tiredness and shortness of breath. SCD can also cause delayed growth, vision problems, high blood pressure, strokes, kidney and urinary problems, bone and joint pain, and lung problems.\u00a0Treatment of sickle cell mostly focuses on preventing and treating complications. The only possible cure for the disorder is a bone marrow transplant but this is only possible for a limited number of affected individuals who have a suitable donor. A medicine called Hydroxyurea can significantly reduce the number of painful crises.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5221\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display-54x54.png 54w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display-148x148.png 148w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/06\/sickle-display.png 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Library has a number of books focusing on SCD and other blood diseases.\u00a0 These books can be found at shelfmark PYHS, with related material in the broader section PY.\u00a0 Topics covered include clinical practice, management and therapy of the disease, genetics, and epidemiological studies of the disease.
