{"id":53,"date":"2014-01-15T16:55:52","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T16:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=53"},"modified":"2014-01-15T16:55:52","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T16:55:52","slug":"ejournal-usage-its-not-just-about-the-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2014\/01\/15\/ejournal-usage-its-not-just-about-the-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ejournal usage: it&#8217;s not just about the numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The start of January saw a flurry of ejournal usage statistics collation for the <a title=\"Society of College, National and University Libraries\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sconul.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">SCONUL<\/a> statistical return.\u00a0\u00a0COUNTER JR1 reports were downloaded, which for LSHTM Library includes from individual publishers,\u00a0the <a title=\"ingentaconnect\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ingentaconnect platform<\/a>,\u00a0and JUSP (<a title=\"JUSP\" href=\"http:\/\/jusp.mimas.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Journal Usage Statistics Portal<\/a>).\u00a0 JR1 reports measure the number of successful full-text monthly article requests by month and journal title.\u00a0 For SCONUL we focus on the period 1 August &#8211; 31 July of each year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62\" style=\"width: 204px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/file00017553513391.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62\" class=\"wp-image-62 \" style=\"margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\" alt=\"Calculator\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/file00017553513391-300x224.jpg\" width=\"194\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/file00017553513391-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2014\/01\/file00017553513391-1024x766.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-62\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morguefile.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>SCONUL statistics are an important tool in helping libraries assess how\u00a0ejournals are being used by their readers.\u00a0\u00a0During 1 August 2012 &#8211; 31 July 2013 there were 333,006 successful\u00a0full-text article requests\u00a0from journals subscribed\u00a0to by LSHTM Library.\u00a0 A summary of the highest usage\u00a0figures is below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elsevier: 135,712<\/li>\n<li>BMJ Publishing Group: 34,624<\/li>\n<li>Oxford University Press: 25,411<\/li>\n<li>Nature Publishing Group: 18,452<\/li>\n<li>Ovid: 12,239<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several publishers saw a significant rise in article requests compared with 2011 &#8211; 12.\u00a0 Requests to titles from\u00a0Wiley, Sage, the American Medical Association, and Taylor &amp; Francis all increased.\u00a0 However, on the flip side requests to some publishers saw a decline.\u00a0 A reduction in JR1 requests can be caused by many factors including difficulty in navigating publisher platforms, material being published as Open Access, authentication issues, and changes in subjects being taught or researched.<\/p>\n<p>A report\u00a0by <a title=\"E-journals: their use, value and impact\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rin.ac.uk\/our-work\/communicating-and-disseminating-research\/e-journals-their-use-value-and-impact\" target=\"_blank\">RIN<\/a>\u00a0(2009) showed\u00a0that a high volume of article downloads in an institution\u00a0was linked to increased research productivity and outcomes e.g. successful research grant applications, more papers being published, and a greater number of PhD awards.\u00a0 If you have experienced any issues in accessing titles, or think there are ways we can improve our service, we would welcome any feedback (contact details at the end of this post).<\/p>\n<p>Ejournal statistics provide a wealth of usage information and can be used to help the Library maintain a high quality service.\u00a0 For example changing usage patterns can feed into the collection development process, we can ensure &#8216;value for money&#8217;
