{"id":5368,"date":"2018-07-27T10:46:07","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T10:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=5368"},"modified":"2024-03-25T16:30:57","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T16:30:57","slug":"eahil-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2018\/07\/27\/eahil-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"EAHIL 2018 &#8211; Take away messages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/eahilcardiff2018.wordpress.com\/\">EAHIL Conference<\/a> held in the Royal Welsh College of Music &amp; Drama from 11-13 July. EAHIL is the European\u00a0Association for Health Information and Libraries and it was great to meet and learn from health librarians from across Europe and further afield.<\/p>\n<p>I was presenting in the first set of parallel sessions, which was great as it meant my nerves didn&#8217;t have a chance to catch hold and I had a way in to network with strangers (not my strong point) for the rest of the conference. I was presenting in the Richard Burton Lecture Theatre (intimidating or what!?) with <strong>Irma Klerings from Cochrane Austria<\/strong>. Irma and colleagues looked at the impact of searching in fewer databases in rapid reviews and compared outcomes found from a rapid or a full systematic review. Her three conclusions were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If decision makers are willing to accept less certainty and a small risk for opposite conclusions, some abbreviated searches are viable options for rapid evidence synthesis.<\/li>\n<li>Decisions demanding high certainty require comprehensive searches<\/li>\n<li>Impact of abbreviated searches depends on type of intervention, &#8220;size&#8221; of the topic, and definition of &#8220;changed conclusion&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She also found that limiting number of databases was more suitable for reviews of pharmacological interventions and <strong>public health topics were more liable to change conclusions if less databases were searched<\/strong> &#8211; very pertinent information for us at the School.<\/p>\n<p>As was also drawn out in the Q&amp;A afterwards&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Many of the references indexed in the databases but which were not retrieved by the search did not have abstracts \u2014 i.e. they are there, but the information that allows us to find them is not. It was great to meet her and compare notes.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see from Amanda&#8217;s tweet, the stage and my slides were huge. Caroline also mentioned a resource which was new to me: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medbox.org\/\">Medbox<\/a>. This is the total number of items screened divided by the number included in the review. He argued that as there is no benchmarks for searching, we all do it slightly differently. Therefore the individual\/institution carrying out the search has as big an impact to the results retrieved as the topic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewB007h?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AndrewB007h<\/a> argues that the person\/institution doing the review is as important tothe results as the topic.
