{"id":553,"date":"2014-06-10T10:50:29","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T10:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=553"},"modified":"2024-03-25T16:23:15","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T16:23:15","slug":"beware-predator-publishers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2014\/06\/10\/beware-predator-publishers\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware the predatory publishers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Taking a stand against predatory publishers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As \u2018Open Access\u2019 has become an integral part of scholarly communication there have been a number of new entrants to the scholarly publishing market who have been deemed \u2018predatory\u2019. It is likely that researchers will have received e-mails from these predators offering to publish your research in their journals through \u2018article processing charges\u2019. Their aim is not to disseminate research but to make money from researchers. What complicates this even more is that the publishers\u2019 websites appear professional \u2013 until you start digging around that is. Other characteristics include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accepting articles quickly with little or no peer review or quality control, including hoax and nonsensical papers.<\/li>\n<li>Notifying academics of article fees only after papers are accepted<\/li>\n<li>Aggressively campaigning for academics to submit articles or serve on editorial boards.<\/li>\n<li>Listing academics as members of editorial boards without their permission, and not allowing academics to resign from editorial boards.<\/li>\n<li>Appointing fake academics to editorial boards.<\/li>\n<li>Mimicking the name or web site style of more established journals. <strong>Source <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Predatory_open-access_publishing\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The webcast below by\u00a0Jeanette Hatherill, M.I.S Scholarly Communication Librarian, University of Ottawa is designed to inform you about the risky world of online publishing and how to identify journals that may take your money at the cost of your credibility.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"watch-headline-title\" class=\"yt\"><span id=\"eow-title\" class=\"watch-title long-title \" dir=\"ltr\" title=\"Pitfalls of Academic Publishing What You Need to Know About Choosing a Journal\">Pitfalls of Academic Publishing What You Need to Know About Choosing a Journal<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eH8m7QrTqEc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately they should be avoided since they do not fulfil the requirements for open access and publishing with them will not meet any funder\u2019s open access requirements. If you are at all concerned about a particular publisher there is a current <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarlyoa.com\/publishers\/\">list<\/a> of predatory ones: and the <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarlyoa.com\/2012\/11\/30\/criteria-for-determining-predatory-open-access-publishers-2nd-edition\/\">criteria<\/a> by which these publishers were included is also available:<\/p>\n<p>We include information about such publishers in the copyright and open access training session we run each term.
