Their claims led them on a tour of the United States, which led to the emergence of new mediums and Spiritualists throughout the country. The popularity of Spiritualism was not confined to the United States; in 1853 the UK\u2019s first Spiritualist church opened in Yorkshire and the first national Spiritualist meeting was held in 1890. By the 1930s, the UK had an estimated 250,000 practising spiritualists, proving that Spiritualism had captured the imagination of many throughout the world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5719\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2018\/10\/31\/sir-ronald-ross-and-the-ghost-hypothesis\/conan-doyle002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-5719\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5719\" class=\"Letter from Sir Ronald Ross, 1919 wp-image-5719 size-medium\" title=\"Letter from Sir Ronald Ross, 1919\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/10\/Conan-Doyle002-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"Letter from Sir Ronald Ross, 1919\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/10\/Conan-Doyle002-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/10\/Conan-Doyle002-768x969.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/files\/2018\/10\/Conan-Doyle002-812x1024.jpg 812w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Letter from Sir Ronald Ross, 1919<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Spiritualism captivated the imaginations of prominent figures such as physicist Sir Oliver Lodge, chemist Sir William Crookes, and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In his letter to Sir Ronald Ross in 1919 <a href=\"http:\/\/calmview.lshtm.ac.uk\/CalmView\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=GB+0809+Ross%2f146%2f21%2f44\">(GB 0809 Ross\/146\/21\/44)<\/a>, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle implored Ross to turn his, \u2018powerful mind towards psychic matters\u2019 and argued that those who were still sceptical, even after reading the seemingly convincing pamphlet on spiritualism by Crookes, \u2018must have a mental kink\u2019. Ross did not share the Conan Doyle\u2019s beliefs, in response to his letter, Ross politely stated that he was far too busy to study \u2018psychic phenomena\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/calmview.lshtm.ac.uk\/CalmView\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=GB+0809+Ross%2f146%2f21%2f45\">(GB 0809 Ross\/146\/21\/45)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ross did not hold back when he reviewed the \u2018Ghost-Hypothesis: on spirit experiences\u2019 by Charles A Mercier <a href=\"http:\/\/calmview.lshtm.ac.uk\/CalmView\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=GB+0809+Ross%2f132%2f59\">(GB 0809 Ross\/132\/59)<\/a>, where he questioned spirits inability to hold a conversation, \u2018<em>when they speak why do they not say something great or useful?\u2019<\/em> or communicate during daylight hours, <em>\u2018If only these ghosts would come out and have a plain talk with us on a sunny day in an open field, or say in Hyde Park, what a lot of trouble would be saved?\u2019<\/em>. Sir Ronald Ross was also perturbed with the idea that spirits were able to wear clothes and hold inanimate objects:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5726\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2018\/10\/31\/sir-ronald-ross-and-the-ghost-hypothesis\/fox-sisters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-5726\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5726\" class=\"The Fox sisters, by T. Easterly, 1852<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u2018Very few of our acquaintances claim to have seen ghosts; but we have read of ghosts who wore winding sheets, chain-mail, or bob-wigs, and who carried daggers, swords, pistols, candles, and bleeding hearts\u2026If we believe these stories, then we must believe , not only in ghosts of the human form, but also in ghosts of linen, hair, iron and tallow\u2026If we refuse to accept this deduction , we must believe only in naked ghosts\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rather than enter an existential crisis, Ross concluded that spiritualism and spiritualists\u2019, \u2018<em>believe in it because they wish to believe in it; they invent evidence and pervert argument in order to convince themselves; and maintain that it is true because it is pleasant\u2019<\/em>.
