Renowned for his work\u00a0on\u00a0Malaria during the Second World War,\u00a0Neil Hamilton Fairley, who\u00a0held a lecturer position at LSHTM in the\u00a01920s, dedicated his life to\u00a0the research of parasitic disease. This blog explores his life\u00a0and\u00a0work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Born in Australia in 1891, Neil Hamilton Fairley was one of four\u00a0surviving brothers to enter the medical profession. He qualified as a\u00a0doctor in 1915, graduating with First Class\u00a0Honours\u00a0from the University of Melbourne.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On\u00a0qualifying, Fairley took up a residency at\u00a0Melbourne Hospital where he soon became involved in\u00a0treating an\u00a0outbreak of Meningococcal Meningitis. A\u00a0disease that\u00a0threatened to overwhelm the\u00a0armed forces as the living conditions of the troops made them particularly vulnerable to infection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the outbreak of the First World War Fairley joined the Australian Army Medical Service and was posted to Egypt in 1916 as a pathologist to the 11th<\/sup>\u00a0Australian General\u00a0Hospital. It was during his time In Egypt that Fairley\u00a0first became involved in\u00a0both\u00a0the treatment of\u00a0Typhus\u00a0Fever and\u00a0Schistosomiasis \u2013 a parasitic disease\u00a0found in fresh water\u00a0that posed one of the most significant threats to the health of the\u00a0troops in Egypt\u00a0during the war.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

His expertise in\u00a0Schistosomiasis would prove invaluable once the war was over\u00a0and he was\u00a0appointed\u00a0as Medical Research Officer in Bombay.\u00a0Amid concern that soldiers returning from Egypt would introduce the parasite to India, Fairley conducted further research into effective treatment of the disease. While in India he\u00a0went on to\u00a0develop his knowledge of parasitic disease, investigating Guinea Worm Fever and Tropical Sprue, a digestive disorder\u00a0affecting the small intestine\u2019s ability to absorb nutrition. Fairley himself, succumbed to the disease, forcing him to\u00a0leave his post in India.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On his\u00a0recovery, Fairley\u00a0returned to Australia and\u00a0in 1927,\u00a0worked for\u00a0the Walter and Eliza Hill Research Institute as Commonwealth Research Officer\u00a0where his research included a study on snake bites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By 1929, Fairley had once again left Australia, this time to take up a post\u00a0as both\u00a0Assistant\u00a0Physician at the Hospital for\u00a0Tropical\u00a0Disease and Lecturer at LSHTM. Fairley continued his\u00a0fervour\u00a0for\u00a0research\u00a0while\u00a0working at the\u00a0School, exploring\u00a0conditions such as\u00a0Filariasis\u00a0and\u00a0Black Water Fever.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, it was\u00a0his contribution to the treatment of Malaria during the\u00a0Second World War that\u00a0would define Fairley\u2019s career.\u00a0In 1940 he\u00a0rejoined the Australian Army Medical Service as colonel and\u00a0was appointed as Honorary Consultant in Tropical Disease.\u00a0His wartime medical interventions included encouraging\u00a0the army to change\u00a0its\u00a0plan to deploy troops to Macedonia in 1941,\u00a0as Fairley was concerned this would coincide with Malaria season. Most significantly,\u00a0Fairley\u2019s work during this time\u00a0focused on\u00a0researching, and then\u00a0implementing, a regime of prophylactic\u00a0malaria\u00a0treatment\u00a0which was rolled out across the allied forces with great effect.<\/p>\n

The end of the war saw Fairley return\u00a0to Britain where he took up the newly created role of\u00a0Wellcome Chair of Tropical Medicine at LSHTM. However, ill health led to his resignation in 1950.\u00a0In his\u00a0latter\u00a0years\u00a0Fairley\u00a0was a highly respected \u2018Elder Statesman of tropical medicine\u2019 and\u00a0was\u00a0a member of various prominent boards and societies,\u00a0until his death in 1966.\u00a0<\/p>\n
