{"id":738,"date":"2014-07-28T14:31:43","date_gmt":"2014-07-28T14:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=738"},"modified":"2024-03-25T16:23:15","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T16:23:15","slug":"social-media-buzz-research-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2014\/07\/28\/social-media-buzz-research-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing Altmetrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have noticed the recently installed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.altmetric.com\/researchers.php\">Altmetrics<\/a>\u00a0plug-in on the School&#8217;s online repository of research &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk\/\">LSHTM Research Online<\/a>\u00a0as well as on the Schools&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intra.lshtm.ac.uk\/publications\/\">Publications Database<\/a>. Below each\u00a0paper now appears a doughnut or polo with different colours and a number \u00a0to quickly convey information about each article. From there you are taken to another page and can see further details of\u00a0the social &#8220;buzz&#8221; surrounding that article. Altmetrics measures\u00a0the \u201cimpact\u201d of a piece of research by counting the number of times that it\u2019s mentioned in tweets, Facebook pages, blogs, YouTube, news media as well as research platforms such as Mendeley and\u00a0citeulike.<\/p>\n<p>Alternative metrics, or altmetrics as they are more commonly known, have received a lot of attention recently with news<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/blog\/2014\/jul\/23\/expanding-altmetrics-include-policy-documents-boost-reputation\">\u00a0items<\/a>\u00a0describing their rise as an &#8220;Alternative&#8221; metric\u00a0to\u00a0measure research impact.\u00a0However, not everyone has been convinced and you can read an interesting counter-argument\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcscience.net\/?p=6369\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can see for yourself by checking out\u00a0one of your papers via Research Online or the Pubs DB to see if it&#8217;s been picked up on social media or the news. Added features are a geographical breakdown of tweets as well\u00a0Tweeter demographics (scientist, journalist, Joe Bloggs). You can also monitor via email \u00a0updates when your article is shared.
