I&#8217;m going to focus on research articles as those changes are round the corner. Questions about other publication types? Get in touch!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you need to know?<\/h4>\n<p>Any research articles submitted after 1 April 2022 will need to comply with Plan S rules. Scratching your head wondering what on earth Plan S could be? Never fear &#8211; see below for a quick summary!<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is it, in short?<\/h5>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> An initiative for full and immediate open access. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This means that all UKRI-funded outputs submitted after 1 April 2022 must be made open access immediately, either by publishing<strong> gold open access <\/strong>or <strong>green open access<\/strong> with a<strong> CC BY licence<\/strong> and <strong>no embargo<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does it work?<\/h5>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> There are a few options for publication:\n<ul>\n<li>publish in a <strong>fully open access journal<\/strong> (find them in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\">Directory of Open Access Journals, DOAJ<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>publish in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/transformative-journals-faq\/\"><strong>transformative journal<\/strong><\/a> (one that has committed to converting to fully OA by 2024).<\/li>\n<li>publish in a journal with whom LSHTM has a<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lshtm.topdesk.net\/tas\/public\/ssp\/content\/detail\/knowledgeitem?unid=13c300b2fd654c8a8eb86e85d56e3cfb\">transformative agreement<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lshtm.topdesk.net\/tas\/public\/ssp\/content\/detail\/knowledgeitem?unid=13c300b2fd654c8a8eb86e85d56e3cfb\">, sometimes called a Read and Publish Agreement, or simply open access deal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>publish closed access in a hybrid journal, and use the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RRS_onepager.pdf\">Rights Retention Strategy<\/a><\/strong> to deposit your accepted manuscript with a CC BY license and no embargo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I work out which option to use?<\/h5>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/journalcheckertool.org\/\"><strong>Journal Checker Tool<\/strong><\/a> is a good place to start. Select your journal, funder and affiliation and see all your available options. Check out our <strong>instruction flowcharts<\/strong> for <a href=\"https:\/\/lshtm.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/t\/library\/EV5JSGo5ViZOi_URnHmbQ-oBAV9mZLymzmvM7uUS54vwjg\">UKRI-funded<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lshtm.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/t\/library\/EXfyiOLWCVpEuq2q27UqkjwB0nr8aSYA3iixxmxH7O5Ryg\">Wellcome Trust-funded<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/lshtm.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/t\/library\/EWWT2mOEei5Fnm-n6nJOi5ABrOGDPVQhFsc9iZxpZ1KZ0Q\">unfunded<\/a> authors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thinking this all looks very familiar?<\/h5>\n<p>For the last 5 years (ish) we have been restricting the use of LSHTM funds to fully open access journals only. Why?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our funding allocation has often been depleted midway through the year even with this measure.<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid journals have always had the option of green open access, so complying with funder requirements and making outputs publicly available.<\/li>\n<li>The open access landscape has been moving in this direction for a while (as demonstrated by the development of Plan S). Hybrid journals have been seen by many as a bit of a smokescreen in the open access world, offering an option for open access without having to rethink their own structures. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">UKRI&#8217;s policy means one big change for LSHTM authors: if you&#8217;re going green open access (depositing your accepted manuscript in Research Online via Elements) you need a <strong>CC BY licence<\/strong> and <strong>no embargo<\/strong>. Remember to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RRS_onepager.pdf\">Rights Retention Strategy<\/a> statement in your submission. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<em>This research was funded in whole or in part by [Funder] [Grant number].
