{"id":899,"date":"2014-09-26T10:20:54","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T10:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=899"},"modified":"2014-09-26T10:20:54","modified_gmt":"2014-09-26T10:20:54","slug":"warm-welcome-new-students-library-archives-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2014\/09\/26\/warm-welcome-new-students-library-archives-service\/","title":{"rendered":"A warm welcome to our new students from the Library &amp; Archives Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a lot of excitement in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/\" target=\"_blank\">Library<\/a> at present as we prepare for the new academic year.\u00a0 We have already welcomed the first intake of students on the Diploma in Tropical Nursing; yesterday afternoon we ran Library tours for our international students; and next week will be the official beginning of the autumn term.\u00a0 We look forward to meeting every one of the hundreds of students who are joining us at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\"> LSHTM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of information for new arrivals to take in in orientation week.\u00a0 When you have had a chance to catch your breath, please come along to the Library any time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/general_information\/opening_hours\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">when we are open<\/a> \u2013 all the staff here will be happy to help you with anything related to our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/general_information\/studyfacilities\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">study facilities<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/resources\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">information resources<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/guidance\/training\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">information skills training<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To make sure that you can hit the ground running, you should\u00a0attend our <strong>Foundation skills classes<\/strong> <strong>in weeks 1 and 2.\u00a0 <\/strong>These classes are aimed at Masters level students, but anybody is welcome to attend.\u00a0 The classes are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foundation 1: Finding items on your reading list &amp; citing them in an assignment <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This class will give you an introduction to the Library, help you to decipher your reading list, find and access print and electronic material in the Library, and avoid plagiarism in your written work.<\/p>\n<p>This class is offered twice a day from <strong>Monday 6 October \u2013 Friday 10 October<\/strong>, at <strong>1pm-2pm <\/strong>and<strong> 5:30pm-6:30pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foundation 2: Effective literature searching in Google and PubMed <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This class provides an introduction to literature searching skills, helping you to search more effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>This class is offered twice a day from <strong>Monday 13 October \u2013 Friday 17 October<\/strong>, at <strong>1pm-2pm<\/strong> and <strong>5:30pm-6:30pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The classes are all held in the main Reading Room in the Library. You only need to come to one session of each class, whenever is most convenient for you. There is no need to book your place, just arrive on time for one of the sessions. 30 places are available in each class, allocated on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n<p>Students in previous years have found these classes invaluable.\u00a0 See some of their comments below:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAn awesome experience.
