{"id":9231,"date":"2024-05-30T09:19:23","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T09:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/?p=9231"},"modified":"2024-05-30T09:21:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T09:21:41","slug":"effective-literature-searching-relevant-for-msc-projects-booking-now-available-all-sessions-on-zoom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lshtm.ac.uk\/library\/2024\/05\/30\/effective-literature-searching-relevant-for-msc-projects-booking-now-available-all-sessions-on-zoom\/","title":{"rendered":"Effective Literature Searching: relevant for MSc Projects &#8211; booking now available (all sessions on Zoom)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>These take place on: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1 &#8211; step by step literature searching<\/strong>: relevant to all types of MSc project.<br \/>Monday 24 June 13:00 to 14:30<br \/>Thursday 27 June 11:00 to 12:30<br \/>Monday 1 July 12:00 to 13:00<br \/>Tuesday 2 July 10:00 to 11:30<\/p>\n<p>All the above Part 1 sessions are the same &#8211; you only need to book on one session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2 &#8211; advanced literature searching<\/strong>: relevant to literature review type MSc Projects (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, policy review, meta-analysis).<br \/>Tuesday 25 June 15:00 to 16:30<br \/>Friday 28 June 13:00 to 14:30<br \/>Monday 1 July 15:30 to 17:00<br \/>Tuesday 2 July 14:30 to 16:00<\/p>\n<p>All the above Part 2 sessions are the same &#8211; you only need to book on one session if relevant to your MSc project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BOOK HERE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentbookings.lshtm.ac.uk\/index.php\/courses\/library\">https:\/\/studentbookings.lshtm.ac.uk\/index.php\/courses\/library<\/a>\u00a0(all times are BST).<br \/>We will email you with the Zoom link 24 hours before the session starts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE: these are a repeat of sessions run in February 2024<\/strong> so if you attended then you will not need to attend again, unless you wish to refresh your skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who should attend?<\/strong><br \/>Part 1 sessions: any MSc students working on their project proposal or their project.<\/p>\n<p>Part 2 sessions: any MSc students undertaking a literature review type MSc Project (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, policy review, meta-analysis).<br \/><strong><br \/><\/strong>MSc students (both \u2018intensive\u2019 &amp; \u2018distance learning\u2019 programmes) who did not have literature searching sessions scheduled in your MSc Programme timetable or were not able to attend: please feel free to sign up these sessions.<\/p>\n<p>MSc students who have already attended Effective Literature Searching training sessions, and want to have a refresher session, you are also welcome to sign up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTES<\/strong>:<br \/>1. If you have not attended any literature searching sessions before and you are interested in Part 2, then you must have attended Part 1 first (otherwise Part 2 may not make sense!).<br \/>2. If you have signed up for the Reviewing the Literature module and you attended the literature training sessions in Term 1 or 2, then you do not need to attend the above sessions unless you need a refresher.<br \/>3. If you have attended a literature searching session as part of your MSc Programme, you might prefer to re-watch the recording of that session on your MSc Programme\u2019s Moodle page, or the MSc Public Health recording on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ble.lshtm.ac.uk\/enrol\/index.php?id=88\">Library Moodle page<\/a>.<br \/>4. These sessions are repeated on each day listed above. Just choose whichever session works best for your timetable \/ time-zone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1 covers:<br \/><\/strong>Constructing a literature search strategy.<br \/>\u2013 Developing search concepts, search terms &amp; building your search.<br \/>\u2013 Selecting search concepts &amp; keywords\/search terms.<br \/>\u2013 Choosing the right resources to search.<br \/>\u2013 Using Boolean logic to structure an effective search.<br \/>\u2013 How to use search operators (including truncation &amp; wildcards). OVID Medline will be the main database used in these sessions.<br \/>\u2013 Using basic search filters and date limits.<br \/>\u2013 Finding full text \u2013 what if LSHTM library doesn\u2019t have what I need?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2 covers:<\/strong><br \/>\u2013 Using proximity searching and subject headings: what are they? Why do you need to use them? How do you include them in your search strategy?<br \/>\u2013 Using advanced search filters and limits.<br \/>\u2013 Running your search &amp; transferring it across databases.<br \/>\u2013 Finding full text \u2013 what if LSHTM library doesn\u2019t have what I need?<br \/>\u2013 Planning, methodology &amp; managing your search results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comments from previous years\u2019 attendees:<\/strong><br \/>\u201creally great course\u201d<br \/>\u201cvery good and very helpful\u201d<br \/>\u201cit\u2019s fab!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you cannot attend any of the above sessions, a recording of one session will be made available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ble.lshtm.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=88\">Library Moodle page<\/a>, where you will also find:<br \/>\u2013 recordings of full Literature Searching sessions.<br \/>\u2013 presentations on grey literature and other aspects of the searching process.<br \/>\u2013 plus self-teach mini-modules that you can work through in your own time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A note about \u20181 to 1 sessions\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 if you are conducting a literature review type project (e.g. systematic review, scoping review, policy review, meta-analysis) you can book a 1 to 1 appointment with a Librarian, to discuss your own search strategy for your MSc Project. These can be booked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentbookings.lshtm.ac.uk\/index.php\/courses\/library\">student booking system<\/a>. New slots are added each week.
