In our collection is a copy of his \u201cComplete works (Opera Omnia)\u201d, comprising of chapters devoted to the study of animals. (The history of animals, Movement of Animals, and Parts of animals). The work is in Greek with a Latin introduction.<\/p>\n<p>The work is digitised and is available on this link: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/b21364370\/page\/n3\/mode\/2up\">https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/b21364370\/page\/n3\/mode\/2up<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aristotle used his own observations, statements of those with specialist knowledge such as beekeepers and fishermen, and less accurate accounts from travellers to form the basis of his work.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his observations, such as the form of the heron being related to its function, in terms of feeding for example, hint at the later concept of evolution.<\/p>\n<p>His techniques were mostly those of observation and inference rather than experimentation, and he was one of the first to come up with a classification of living things, the <em>Scala naturae<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among the characteristics or facets of this system were \u201cgroup\u201d, \u201clegs\u201d, \u201cblood\u201d, \u201csouls\u201d and \u201cqualities\u201d. Some of these correspond to later ideas \u2013 \u201cgroup\u201d being similar to concepts of vertebrate \/ invertebrate and the concept of species. \u201cSouls\u201d is a more subjective concept whereby every organism can have up to three types : \u201crational\u201d, \u201csensitive\u201d or \u201cvegetative\u201d. \u201cQualities\u201d is perhaps closest to the concept of physical properties, and breaks down to \u201chot, cold, wet, dry\u201d \u2013 again each living creature can exhibit a number of these qualities in Aristotle\u2019s world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aristotle (Greek:\u00a0\u1f08\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03c2\u00a0384-322 BCE) was an Ancient Greek philosopher.
