How do you say it?<\/p>\n

  1. Borrow (verb)\u00a0\u00a0 \u201ctake and use something belonging to someone else with the intention of returning it\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cMay I borrow this book?\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cMay I take this book out?\u201d<\/p>\n

    The emphasis is on removing the item from the custody of the library for the permitted period in order to study it elsewhere<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019d like to check this out\u201d<\/p>\n

    A more recent phrase, American in origin, or possibly the supermarket check-out \u2013 the word \u201ccheck\u201d acknowledges that a validation will be made.<\/p>\n

    \u201cMay I have this?\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    1. Return (verb)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cgive, send or put back\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \u201cI\u2019m returning this\u201d<\/p>\n

      \u201cI\u2019m bringing this book back\u201d<\/p>\n

      \u201cI\u2019m giving this back\u201d<\/p>\n

      The intent is clear \u2013 the book belongs to the library.<\/p>\n

      \u201cReturning back\u201d<\/p>\n

      \u201cBack\u201d is redundant as it is already understood in the definition, although you can return a book to the library<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      1. Renew (verb) \u201cextend the period for which a licence, subscription or contract is valid\u201d \u00a0; in the library context :\u201cextend the period of my loan\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        \u201cRenew, please\u201d<\/p>\n

        \u201cMay I have this for another week (or whatever the borrowing period is)?\u201d<\/p>\n

        \u201cI would like to extend\u201d<\/p>\n

        \u201cExtend\u201d usually means to make longer, in the physical sense as in extending a room\u201d \u2013 but see the definition of \u201crenew\u201d and you\u2019ll see they know the concept but not the word.<\/p>\n
