This summer we held our first student photo competition to find photos taken by current students representing the theme of A student of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
We received over 50 fantastic entries and the competition was very close, but in the end the judges voted MSc Control of Infectious Diseases student Molly Miller-Petrie the winner for this beautiful picture of children in Kampong Speu, Cambodia.
Molly took the photo while researching for her summer project, in which she is investigating the management of children’s waste and interest in new hygienic disposal products. The project has involved a household survey with 120 houses in two provinces in Cambodia, as well as focus discussion groups conducted in four of the villages from the survey. Molly is working with NGO WaterSHED Asia to identify current practices and barriers or motivators to hygienic practices (i.e. the disposing of feces in a latrine) and potential interest in new products such as potties and latrine pan inserts that might help improve sanitation.
