5 Tips for living reasonably in an expensive London

MSc Tropical Medicine & International Health student Claudia Donkor highlights her top five ways to get a good deal in London:

1) Sign up for points!

Most supermarkets and shops have points schemes or membership rewards. Examples include Tesco (you can get double points at Christmas etc.), Sainsbury’s (500 points can be redeemed for £2.50 off your purchases), Waitrose (offers free cup of tea or coffee to its members daily!). Most also offer occasional vouchers.

2) Hit the Charity shops!

Nothing like getting good, affordable items whilst helping a good cause! I found a brand new leather Dockland pair of boots for £15 in a charity shop just before winter. Now where else will you get such a deal?!

3) Walk or get a bike

Cheaper than buses or trains. Saves you also on gym subscriptions! Simple but effective.

4) Look out for coupons, vouchers and deals

There are fantastic websites like Wowcher, Groupon and lastminute.com where one can snag deals such as dinner for two, including wine for less than £25! Also, check out Timeout magazine, newspapers (Metro and Evening Standard are free!) etc. for deals being offered in London. It is worth noting that most of the Museums in London are free!

5) Lunch dates with Hare Krishna outside SOAS and sign-up for School events with reception

The Hare Krishna group/Food for all project generously offer tasty lunch outside SOAS for a token contribution. There usually is a queue so get your timing right. The food is vegan and yum! Worth the effort whilst helping a good cause too. Also, sign-up for School events for the knowledge and enjoy a free reception afterwards on some occasions.

Enjoy all that London has to offer without breaking the bank!
