PROFESSOR MACPHERSON MALLEWA
Professor Macpherson Mallewa is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist and Associate Professor in the department of Paediatrics and Child Health, College of Medicine, University of Malawi. He obtained his primary medical degree (MBBS)at the University of Malawi’s College of Medicine, and then underwent general Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology training (MRCPCH) at the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital, Alder Hey, Liverpool, UK. He obtained a PhD and DTM&H at the University of Liverpool. He was a recipient of a Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship in Clinical Tropical Medicine and was the core Paediatrician at Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Research Programme (MLW).
Professor Mallewa’s main area of research interest is central nervous system infections in children, including the interaction between viruses and plasmodium malaria in causing severe disease. He is currently involved in a number of clinico-pathological studies in severe malaria and the role other pathogens in retinopathy negative cerebral malaria, including non-malaria comas. He currently supervises a PhD student and several MMed students, and is the lead clinician on the QECH paediatric research ward.
