Jarvis profile

PROFESSOR JOSEPH JARVIS

Professor Joseph Jarvis is an infectious diseases consultant and clinical researcher, currently based full time in Gaborone, Botswana, where he works for the Botswana-UPenn Partnership, a partnership between the University of Botswana, the Botswana Ministry of Health, and the University of Pennsylvania. He undertook specialist training in infectious diseases and tropical medicine in London, most recently at the hospital for tropical diseases, and also academic ID training through St. George’s University of London and LSHTM. His primary research interest is in HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis, and he was awarded a Wellcome Trust training fellowship in 2007 which funded a 3-year period of clinical research based in Cape Town, South Africa followed by a visiting scholarship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, USA. His interest in cryptococcal meningitis extends from basic pathophysiology and T-cell immunology, through clinical trials, to epidemiology and public health interventions aimed at reducing the morbidity and mortality due to this severe opportunistic infection. He has close collaborations with groups both in the UK (primarily the cryptococcal meningitis group at St. George’s headed by Professor Tom Harrison) and overseas, and although primarily based in Botswana, he travels frequently to other African countries, and is currently involved in ongoing studies in various African sites including South Africa and Tanzania.

Professor Jarvis is the Chief Investigator for the AMBITION (High Dose AMBISOME on a Fluconazole Backbone for Cryptococcal Meningitis Induction Therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: A Phase 3 Randomised Controlled Non-Inferiority Trial) Study. The AMBITION-cm project aims to determine whether a short treatment course of a single intravenous high-dose liposomal amphotericin (L-AmB, Ambisome), a newer formulation of amphotericin B, is as effective as the 14-day amphotericin B-based therapy in averting all-cause mortality in patients with cryptococcal meningitis.
