Colonial Interventions

Annual Report 1947-8, p.20.

The Nutrition Development Unit saw its role as to not only research and gather data on the eating habits and methods of food production of the Nyasaland people, but also to intervene more directly in the lives of the people they encountered. For the researchers there was an assumption of superiority. An idea that they, as colonisers, were in possession of knowledge and expertise which would improve the health and overall lifestyles of the local populations.

This section will explore these interventions and the problems they encountered.
