The widespread adoption of preprints provides opportunities to revolutionize how scientific discoveries are communicated with the wider research community. Preprints enable scientists to share the latest developments and findings in their research and obtain community feedback that can be used to support decision making on how it is be developed in the future. As a citable scientific output, they also provide authors with proof of progress and productivity, which can be used to advance their careers through grant and job applications.
This webinar, led by members of the bioRxiv and medRxiv team, will outline how the sharing of preprints can aid researchers in enhancing the impact of their scientific research and comply with established and emerging community requirements, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s mandate on preprints.
The presenters will provide an interactive demo of the bioRxiv and medRxiv platforms, two non-profit preprint services that host more than 200,000 preprints on topics spanning fundamental biology and clinical research and are visited by a combined figures of ~9 million readers every month. The presenters will go on to explore how LSHTM researchers can make their preprints available on the bioRxiv/medRxiv platforms and the potential gains for their research.
Bio
Dr. Sol Fereres Rapoport, bioRxiv Content Lead
Sol completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, focusing on developmental biology and genetics. She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, where she studied cell-to-cell communication in both normal and cancer development. During her time at UCSF, Sol was able to learn first-hand how preprints can have a great impact on scientists by being able to share their research sooner and faster. In January 2020, Sol joined bioRxiv, where she combines her love for scientific discovery with her passion for supporting the research community. At bioRxiv, she enjoys staying connected with cutting-edge science and engaging with scientists while helping them share their work and make it accessible to the broader community.
Dr. Samantha Hindle, bioRxiv and medRxiv Content Manager
Sam completed her Ph.D. at the University of York, UK, where she characterized neurodegenerative disorders in Drosophila. During her postdoctoral position at University of California San Francisco studying the Drosophila blood-brain barrier, she became increasingly passionate about open science and the potential for preprints to rewrite the way scientists disseminate their research. Following her passion for preprints, Sam became the Content Lead at bioRxiv in 2018 and is now Content Manager of bioRxiv and medRxiv. Sam is also co-founder of PREreview, a scientist-driven initiative that provides peer review training and empowers early career scientists to engage in community preprint review.
