There is a lot of information for new arrivals to take in in orientation week. When you have had a chance to catch your breath, please come along to the Library any time when we are open – all the staff here will be happy to help you with anything related to our study facilities, information resources and information skills training.
To make sure that you can hit the ground running, you should attend our Foundation skills classes in weeks 1 and 2. These classes are aimed at Masters level students, but anybody is welcome to attend. The classes are:
Foundation 1: Finding items on your reading list & citing them in an assignment
This class will give you an introduction to the Library, help you to decipher your reading list, find and access print and electronic material in the Library, and avoid plagiarism in your written work.
This class is offered twice a day from Monday 6 October – Friday 10 October, at 1pm-2pm and 5:30pm-6:30pm.
Foundation 2: Effective literature searching in Google and PubMed
This class provides an introduction to literature searching skills, helping you to search more effectively and efficiently.
This class is offered twice a day from Monday 13 October – Friday 17 October, at 1pm-2pm and 5:30pm-6:30pm.
The classes are all held in the main Reading Room in the Library. You only need to come to one session of each class, whenever is most convenient for you. There is no need to book your place, just arrive on time for one of the sessions. 30 places are available in each class, allocated on a first come, first served basis.

This year, for the first time, the Library will also be making the Foundation 1 class available as an e-learning option on Moodle, for the benefit of our Distance Learning students and those who are unable to attend any of the classes in week 1.
