The social media landscape is changing. Concerns about governance and moderation on some social media platforms has brought many users in universities and other public sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to consider alternative networks. Recognising this changing environment, we have paused our activity on X and established a presence on Bluesky.
We launched LSHTM Library, Archives and Open Science Services (LAORS) on Bluesky at the start of February. In the short time we have been on the platform, we’ve already built up a strong following, including other academic libraries, archives and other research institutions, as well as individuals.
What’s it for?
We aim to create a space where our community can stay connected, informed, and involved.
The account will help us talk directly with students and staff about how LAORS can serve them best. Whether we’re planning changes or looking for ways to improve the student experience, Bluesky will provide a channel for conversation.
It will also be the go-to place for real‑time updates; if there’s an unexpected library closure, any major e‑resource outages or issues affecting reading lists, we’ll post it there.
We’ll be using the account to highlight the vital work of LAORS in championing open science, promoting information literacy, sharing useful resources, and celebrating the work and achievements of our team.
We’ll be posting about events, teaching and research outputs, including new PhD theses. Alongside these, we’ll share wellbeing content, mark awareness days such as World Aids Day and posting other content to support LSHTM’s values — integrity, embracing difference, cooperative working and creating impact. We will also highlight how we are contributing to the goal of improving sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
