Display for Cervical Cancer Awareness Week 2026

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 19-26 January 2026

For the book display to mark Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, we have picked out a selection of books and pamphlets from our collections.

Almost 38 years ago, in March 1988, UK television broadcaster TV-AM produced a pamphlet on cervical cancer. Assisted by BACUP, CancerLink and Women’s National Cancer Campaign, the pamphlet describes the main symptoms and the importance of smear tests, and is signed by contemporary media personalities Anne Diamond, Claire Rayner and Jayne Irving. By this time, breakfast television had been established for 5 years.

Also in the display is a memorial volume dedicated to Dr Jian Zhou, (1957-1999). Dr Zhou worked with Professor Ian Frazer in Australia on research into the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which led to the development of the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine. The text in is English and Chinese and the volume was published simultaneously in Beijing and Brisbane, entitle  Dr Jian Zhou’s brilliant mind : the inventor of cervical cancer vaccine (2008).
